I first began to paint with a small group at
Aireys Inlet in the late 1990’s. After the
meeting date was changed I had to find
other venues and thus have experienced
many different tutors, working sometimes for
a day demonstration or two, sometimes
doing a term in one class or other to
experience different teachers, and mediums.
My favourite medium was, and is, Oil, but I
have challenged myself by trying other
mediums such as pastel, charcoal, acrylic,
inks and watercolour over the past few
years. I have had a few excursions within
Australia, and occasionally overseas with
different tutors, not only enjoying the exotic
places visited, but being shown by the expert
how it is done, and meeting new friends
whilst doing so.
It is a fact, that whilst sketching a scene,
especially using this as a form of diary when
travelling, that scene is remembered so
completely and better than any photographic
record you may make. Even just a few
strokes of a pen can evoke the where, the
when and remembered circumstances of
that expedition. For the past three years I
have been painting with the Emerald Hill Art
Group, meeting once weekly in South
Melbourne, and more recently, I have
become a happy member of the Elgin
Artists, where I continue with my oil painting.
I am a realist expressionist painter, using
quite strong colour, and I like to paint the
scenic beauty of Australia, as well as some
still life and portraiture.
